This year I had the privilege of heading the Swedish design section of the 2014 SWEA Toronto Christmas Festival and it was a bit hectic getting the order together, but fun nonetheless! I’m introducing a lot of new products this year both to excite the big crowds that are sure to come and to give a twist to the “samma gamla” old products we’ve been carrying for years. Call it, the “Myleen touch” LOL!
Here’s a preview of what is coming. New this year but not to many who know and love Design House Stockholm are the Pleece hoods and scarves that are sure to be a hit… all made in Borås Sweden of the cuddly, soft pleated fleece. The texture is a definite show stopper and has a timeless, chic look. They have had these since 1997 and are fast-sellers since I started my design business years ago. The colors have changed according to trends and this year they have introduced a grayish-brown “Mud” color and a burnt umber “Flame” that has color, but still maintains neutrality. Although not cheap by any means, quality is what you’re paying for and they are worth it! I have had my Pleece items for years and they are still gorgeous. SWEA will be selling it much cheaper than online or at the famous MoMA store in NYC!
Another fantastic line that’s sure to excite the crowd is the Pippi products from Pluto. Pippi is a signature Swedish icon and symbol of rebellion and strong children’s rights in the country. We will be selling Pippi aprons, wall hangers, bookshelves and thermometers! They are quite modern, yet classic Astrid Lindgren pieces.
We will also be selling traditional items, for all you pining for the Swedish countryside. This year, I have ordered nicer quality 7 arm candoliers (last year they were 5 arm) or adventsljus that commonly adorn the window sills of Swedish homes across the country. I have even gotten replacement bulbs for them, in case they burn out (which often they do). Also, we will have various things with the beloved Dala horses, Swedish flags and Christmas goats.
In addition, we will have some of our favorites back, such as Kjell Orrling’s beautiful wooden bowls, cutting boards and other small delights. His wife will also be bringing in “Julpyssel” or Christmas crafts for sale.
Christmas markets in Sweden are quite special. Usually held outdoors in the freezing temperatures, it’s till cosy or “mysigt”. At least this one will be held indoors at the Harbourfront Centre, November 22-23rd Saturday 11-5pm and Sunday 11-4pm. We are sure to have a great assortment of design and Christmas items for every taste and age. Please do come to our festival!!
I am looking to buy the candles like above in Canada – any suggestions?
