This years Swedish films at Hot Docs in Toronto are pretty varied, from an old Swedish has-been socialite to the violent decolonization in Africa, it is going to be interesting! Here is the offering and descriptions from the Hot Docs website:
Concerning Violence
Unearthing astounding footage of the fight for decolonization and with an intuitive understanding of the raw power of these images, Olsson shapes the film rather than edits it, structuring it into nine chapters propelled forward by the powerful voice of activist and artist Lauryn Hill.
Olga – To My Friends
It’s solid white as far as the eye can see and Olga’s body is a tiny speck of black walking across the endless snow. She lives all alone in a reindeer herdsman’s cabin in the Russian tundra, some 1,800 kilometres north of Moscow. Battling bone-chilling temperatures most of the year, her job is safeguarding the canned provisions on which the herdsmen rely for survival during summer.
Penthouse North
At 62, Swedish beauty Agneta Eckemyr’s high living days of fame, wild love and positive cash flow are definitely behind her. Once a sexy bombshell with a promising movie career, she was even a fashion designer who boasted a celebrity clientele. Today, she has one goal: to hold on to her rent-controlled New York City penthouse no matter what.
Adrift (short)
After being forced to flee Uganda, a refugee struggles to find his place in a Swedish town 150 kilometres above the Arctic Circle. Though he’s found safety and freedom in his new home, it becomes clear that he doesn’t belong.
